Introduction

Before we can begin to outline specifics about fishing rods you need to consider the general types of fishing first, this will usually dictate which type of rod should be used or chosen.

Original Rods

Comprising of bamboo and sometimes the branch of a tree fishing rods originally were a very practical tool for catching fish for the pot. As time progressed and fishing became larger as a sport and industry; technology was applied to the humble fishing rod and new materials were experimented with.
 
From a basic bamboo rod to the first split cane rods was a huge leap with reel seats and rings for line these were a great tool in helping to put more fish on the bank. first because they could be made longer and more rigid and secondly they could be cast further.

Today's Rods

As time went on carbon fiber rods became the latest and greatest on the market with stronger rods coupled with much lighter feel both improved the sensitivity and ability of the fisherman to hold the rod for longer periods of time.
 
Compare to the split cane rod the carbon fiber rods were much much lighter. Still today we see some die hard fans using the original bamboo rods however these people are few and far between as the industry is largely dominated by more modern materials in rods today.
 
Fishing lines have developed considerably over the past 50 years to now suit the most balanced of fishing rods on the market.
